Connecting Young Leaders – Career Development: Networking, relationships, leadership and career planning – October 2

On October 1-2, the U.S. Embassy in Wellington New Zealand hosted a 2-day conference called Connecting Young Leaders (CYL). The conference brought together a group of 50 University students from around the country with a variety of academic backgrounds.

Read Ambassador Huebner’s blog posts about the conference:

Great Piece on How Relationship Status (Open, Monogamous, “He Doesn’t Need to Know This”) Affects One’s Health

My editorial comments:

Open? Monogamous? "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell"?

How we parse the sexual aspect of a relationship apparently has personal health consequences; maybe significant ones. Makes perfect sense to me. This piece is, IMHO well worth your time.

Factoid: Of the gay male couples surveyed, about 45% were consensually monogamous; 45% consensually open to some degree; and 10% "What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him."

My two cents: If there’s one thing two guys need to be on the same page about when thinking about starting a relationship … it’s this.

My comment to a friend who responded to this on FB:

"Ray – I, too have noticed that the conversation on this topic is much less "The Women"/"The Boys in the Band"-ish than it was 5-10 years ago. I would guess that the percentage of couples in the third category has dropped by some degree as well. Those are both pieces of good news.

FWIW I’ve been party to dating/relationships in all three categories over the years, and know either of the first two can work for me, depending. But "cheating", when it’s linked to an unwillingness on the other guy’s part to face and discuss the issue … that’s a deal-breaker."
