Depends on the person. Sometimes there isn’t a huge difference aside from the intimacy and sexual contact. Sometimes the guy can be very cautious about being friends with girls so they typically don’t stay close with any girl but their girlfriend.

I have had plenty of female friends. Hanging out with them was just like hanging around with the guys, we just hung out. We talked about regular every day things: Work, jokes, sports, etc. We never had the desire to have sex with each other or get married or anything like that. (There were three exceptions to this, however, but, they were girls I had dated in the past and we were “FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS”. We still made out, had sex and considered getting back together.)

A girlfriend is someone that you go out with on an actual “Date”. You usually want to talk about more intimate, personal topics. You also are with this girl to consider weather or not you want to marry her. It is normal for you to kiss her. You both will also have the desire to have sexual intercourse with each other most of the time.
