Question by teresa S: How can my friend get rid of a free spy ware?
My friend got a popup that wanted to run a free spyware and virus check so, my friend did this and now it said, my friend has a trogen virus and it want’s my friend to pay .99 to get it off the computer and my friend has Norton and System macanic 7 and ran both and they both say no viruses deteced and that everything is running good. This thing won’t let my friend go online and it won’t let my friend make it go away. How can my friend make it go away. My friend doesn’t need spyware protection or virus protection, my friend already has it with Norton and System mechanic 7. How can my friend get rid of this thing so, my friend can use the computer again?

You need to download and install an antispyware utility in order to remove those.
You will also need an antivirus utility. Do a full scan of your computer and remove any infected file that might be found.
    Download any of these:
adaware by lavasoft (has a free version)
    spybot search and destroy (free)
avg antispyware (has a free version)
    spysweeper (shareware)
windows defender (free, but requires a legitimate copy of windows)
    spyware blaster

Do a search for them in gogle.

Install them. Start your computer in safe mode. Do a full scan. Remove anything it finds. Reboot.
Re-scan to see if it’s gone.

Alternatively (windows xp) you can try using system restore to restore from a previous point when your system was working fine.

Go to start screen, click on control panel, click on add remove programs, go down list and click on spy ware program and choose remove. If this does not work you may have to install a spy ware removal program.
Hope this helps and never download a program from a pop up.

Has he run a full system scan?
Also try deleting temporary internet files. It doesn’t sound serious. It sounds like an annoying pop up.

SuperAntiSpyware (free) will get rid of this for you, did with me anyway, I’m just wondering how you will be able to download it if you can’t access the internet?? Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge will answer this for you. Have you tried looking for it and deleting it in Add and Remove Programs? Obviously your friend also needs to rethink his choice of anti-spyware programs as it’s not doing it’s job!!
    Good Luck!
