Secret Squirrel

Autumn is the season when the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) spends more time on the ground, gathering food. Here, the squirrel is sitting in a small patch of sunlight, munching his way through a supply of sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa), which have fallen from the tree.
When I visited Brownsea Island, in late September, the squirrels were having to take the nuts from the branches. By the date of the photograph, many nuts were being brought down by the wind.
In total, I saw 11 different squirrels in the morning, and at least 5 in the afternoon, in different parts of the island. However; this was the only one to pose, on the ground. I have another photographer to thank for this photograph. He was already taking pictures when I arrived; I expect that I would have seen this little chap, but whether my approach would have been cautious enough, we can only speculate. The other photographer got to within 10 feet of the squirrel, and I was a further 10 feet away. The squirrel finally scampered up the tree; not because of the photographers, but due to two peahens, and chicks, trying to get into the photograph!
